As far as container homes go, this one is about as simple as they come. That’s not a bad thing, though, because we love simplicity! Tom at softstainless.com customized this home and specializes in creating living spaces out of shipping containers. He states this is “the toughest, the most weather and burglar resistant cabin you could ever get” and says you can get a unit similar to this one, customized by him, for about $10k. Or, if you’re a DIY’er, this can serve as inspiration for a project you can take on yourself.
Built from a 20′ x 8′ container, this little home is finished with a front porch and a screened sliding glass door which gives the interior lots of natural light. The cherry stained floors are made with thick marine-grade plywood covered with 3 coats of polyurethane for a sleek finish.
The kitchen area has a propane cooktop, an under counter fridge, a sink with the option to drain into a bucket or into an outside disposal container, and a 55 gallon fresh water barrel and pump plumbed in.
4 porthole-style windows in the walls of the container provide additional light, along with a skylight in the roof.
A container such as this can be used as a studio or office, a tough off grid home, an emergency shelter, or a weekend getaway. As Tom states on his site:
If you want unique style, a touch of elegance, and built Bulldog tough, forward thinking structure, maybe this is for you…
