Tucked into the beautiful woodsy landscape in Auckland, New Zealand, this cottage-style tiny house on a trailer has become the primary residence for Tom and Shaye of diyhousebuilding.com and their new baby, Hazel. The couple built the house in 2013 and they have been living in it ever since, enjoying the changes they’ve made to suit the needs of their growing family.
The home includes a beautiful living room with enough space to seat 8 people, with the seating area doubling as as storage. Large windows and glass doors – something I love seeing in tiny houses – open up the space to the outdoors for a bright, airy feel.
Stairs that lead up to the loft double as additional storage, which the couple says is more space than they really need to use. A little office area with a desk for the computer and chair fills the space between the living room and kitchen.
Shallow shelves along the kitchen wall and above the stove serve as a pantry, keeping everything needed for everyday cooking front and center, a convenient feature that eliminates food waste and clutter.
The bathroom features a composting toilet and shelves on one side and a shower stall on the other, with a window for additional light.
The sleeping loft is spacious enough for the couple’s bed along with a bassinet for Hazel. I love the contrast of the dark wood ceiling and floor of the loft with the white walls and wood accents.
